Bujumbura: Families Rising Through Entrepreneurship

“From survival to self-reliance.”

Breaking cycles of poverty requires more than short-term relief; it demands equipping families with tools for long-term self-reliance. In Bujumbura, WiGLI brought this vision to life through innovative income-generating initiatives:

Bricks-Making Project: Vulnerable families received seed capital to start brick-making enterprises. What began as a survival strategy has grown into a steady source of income. Today, these families can afford food, clothing, healthcare, and school fees; restoring dignity and securing their children’s futures.

“Before, I worried about how to feed my children. Today, through brick-making, I can send them to school and provide for their needs with hope,” shared one parent.

Poultry Project: One family received two improved chicks and training in poultry management. Within months, their flock multiplied to 24 chickens, each valued at 90,000 BIF. What started as a small gift became a pathway to financial independence, food security, and resilience.

“These chicks changed my life. From two, now I have many. I can sell some, keep some, and my children will never go hungry again,” said the beneficiary proudly.

📈 Impact: These initiatives show that when families are equipped with skills, resources, and knowledge, they move from vulnerability to stability and from survival to dignity.

➡️ Takeaway: Economic empowerment is not just about income; it is about giving families the power to build a sustainable future for their children. Small, strategic investments create long-term, transformative change.
