In Gasorwe, Muyinga, 15-year-old Josiane Mugisha lived with her parents and eight siblings in a fragile nyakatsi house. Every rainy season, water poured through the leaking roof, soaking her schoolbooks. Without electricity, space to study, or a safe environment, her dream of completing school seemed impossible.
Then hope arrived. Through WiGLI’s household-centered support and community advocacy, neighbors were mobilized to contribute bricks and timber, while WiGLI provided 35 iron sheets, cement, doors, windows, sand, and a solar panel. Together, they transformed a crumbling shelter into a safe, dignified home.
“Now I can study without fear of my books being ruined by rain, and I finally feel hopeful about my future,” Josiane shares.
The change was life-altering. For the first time, Josiane had a secure space and light to study at night, giving her the stability and confidence to succeed. The entire family regained dignity, and Josiane was empowered to focus on her future.
Impact: Today, Josiane has completed high school and is preparing to begin university—a powerful testimony that when families are given safety and dignity, children can unlock their full potential.
