WiGLI conducted a field visit in the provinces of Butanyerera, Burunga, and Buhumuza as part of the implementation of the project “Suivi, Évaluation et Redevabilité pour une Assistance Alimentaire Efficace, Équitable et Transparente au Burundi (SERAA-Burundi)”, implemented with the support and funding of the World Food Programme (WFP).
Burundi remains one of the countries most affected by food insecurity and malnutrition. According to the Comprehensive Food Security and Vulnerability Analysis (CFSVA 2023), approximately 41.2% of households are experiencing food insecurity, with 8.9% facing severe food insecurity. Nutrition surveys (SMART 2022–2024) also indicate alarming levels of malnutrition, with chronic malnutrition reaching 52.8%, one of the highest rates globally.
To address these challenges, the World Food Programme (WFP) supports vulnerable communities through food distributions, cash transfers, school feeding programs, nutrition interventions, resilience-building activities, and shock-responsive social protection initiatives.

The project Suivi, Évaluation et Redevabilité pour une Assistance Alimentaire Efficace, Équitable et Transparente au Burundi (SERAA-Burundi) aims to strengthen independent monitoring, digital data collection, and accountability mechanisms to ensure that food assistance is delivered effectively, equitably, and transparently.
During the field visit, the WiGLI team carried out several monitoring and learning activities,
The mission also provided an opportunity to engage with local authorities, implementing partners, and community leaders to better understand operational challenges and strengthen coordination in delivering humanitarian assistance.
WiGLI would like to express its sincere appreciation to the World Food Programme (WFP) for its financial support and technical collaboration, as well as for the continuous support provided to the teams during the field mission. This partnership plays a critical role in strengthening transparent, accountable, and effective food assistance interventions for vulnerable communities in Burundi.
