Joshua and Bella: Keeping Dreams Alive After Loss

In May 2025, tragedy struck when Joshua (10) and Bella (8) lost their father, the family’s breadwinner. Their father had enrolled them in a high-standard international school in Bujumbura, but after his passing, their mother could not afford the fees or school materials. The children risked being pulled out of school, compounding their grief with educational disruption.

Through advocacy and partnerships, WiGLI mobilized friends and partners who contributed 1,500,000 BIF to cover their tuition and school materials for the first trimester. This support ensured that Joshua and Bella could continue their education without interruption while coping with their loss. Their mother, through her small business, contributes towards their transport costs, fostering a shared commitment to their future.

“Thanks to the support, I can go to school every day and feel like my dad’s dream for us is still alive,” says Joshua.

This intervention highlights WiGLI’s holistic approach—not only meeting immediate needs but also restoring hope, dignity, and continuity for vulnerable families in crisis.
